World Cup trophy begins tour of Mexico under strict security measures
GUADALAJARA, Mexico. — The FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy arrived this Saturday in Guadalajara, one of the 16 venues of the tournament, to kick off its promotional tour through Mexico, where it will visit nine cities with the aim of bringing the emblematic cup closer to the fans.
The presentation was held amid a large security operation, following the violent events that occurred on February 22nd after the capture of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, one of the most wanted criminals by the authorities of Mexico and the United States.
The arrival of the trophy was guarded by members of the Mexican Army, the National Guard, and the state police, who maintained surveillance both in the venue and in the areas near the stadium where the event was held.
103 days before the start of the World Cup, authorities and organizers reiterated a message of reassurance to local fans and the millions of visitors expected to arrive in the country during the competition.
The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, assured that the country is in a position to host the tournament with security and hospitality.
“Mexico is at peace and there is tranquility to enjoy football,” said the official, who also noted that the arrival of approximately 5.5 million visitors is expected in the venues of Guadalajara, Monterrey and Mexico City.
During the ceremony, prominent figures from international football also participated, including the former Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez, historic goalscorer for Real Madrid, and the Brazilian Roque Júnior, world champion with Brazil in the tournament held in 2002.
Local authorities highlighted that Guadalajara seeks to consolidate itself as one of the main venues of the tournament in Mexico. The governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus Navarro, affirmed that the city is prepared to host the event and experience a great sporting celebration.
The trophy tour will remain in Guadalajara until March 2nd. Subsequently, it will continue its journey through León, Veracruz, Chihuahua, Querétaro, Monterrey, Puebla, Mérida and will conclude in Mexico City in June.
The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in football history and will mark the first time that three countries —Mexico, United States, and Canada— jointly organize the competition. ⚽
