Every 28th of May, the world unites to celebrate one of the most popular and beloved foods globally: the hamburger. This special day pays tribute to a dish that has transcended borders and generations, conquering palates and becoming a symbol of modern culinary culture.

Why an International Burger Day?

The exact origin of this celebration is not entirely clear. Some believe it was driven by large fast-food chains to promote their star product, while others trace its roots back to the bakeries of Hamburg, Germany, where the idea of the round bread that accompanies the meat today is believed to have originated. A widespread legend indicates that it was on May 28, 1900, when Louis Lassen, a German immigrant and cook in a restaurant in New Haven, United States, created the first hamburger. According to this story, a customer asked for something quick and simple to eat on the go, and Lassen improvised a sandwich with ground meat, bread, tomato, lettuce, and cheese. Thus was born a dish that over time became an emblem of American and world gastronomy.

A story with an international flavor

Although the hamburger we know today has roots in the United States, its inspiration may be much older. Some experts suggest that similar preparations already existed during the Roman Empire. Others point out that 19th-century German immigrants brought their culinary customs to North America, including a kind of minced steak called “Hamburg steak”, which served as the basis for the hamburger.

More than fast food: a versatile and healthy dish

Contrary to the popular belief that associates the hamburger only with unhealthy fast food, this dish offers great versatility and can be adapted to balanced diets. The basic ingredients — meat, bread, fresh vegetables — are nutritious and can be combined in multiple ways. There are versions with lean meats, vegetarian or vegan options, and healthy sides that allow you to enjoy a burger without guilt.
