“Behind the Storm is Where Silence Dwells”, a book that addresses how to overcome the limitations of autism

Santo Domingo.- With the attendance of former President of the Republic Leonel Fernández and Senator Omar Fernández, the book “Behind the Storm is Where Silence Dwells”, by author Mery Valerio, was launched, which addresses the story of a young visual artist who overcame the limitations of autism and took advantage of his potential to make his way in the visual arts. The story of Engel Segura was shared in a very emotional and well-attended event held at the National Library, where, in addition to Leonel Fernández and his son Omar, various political, academic, and educational figures were present, as well as a large audience made up of hundreds of people, including delegations that came from the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico. It also featured a large representation from various non-governmental organizations that supported the launch of the important book.

Also, the sponsoring senators of Law 34-23, on Attention, Inclusion and Protection for People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), were present. During the ceremony, the senator of the National District for the party Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), Omar Fernández, was in charge of presenting the work in his capacity as the prologue writer. The author, Mery Valerio, narrated the process and development of Engel and her vision on neurodiversity and inclusion, the lack of public policies for timely diagnosis and support from a comprehensive and non-exclusionary intervention.
