Spain’s Murcia region remains under a yellow weather alert for thunderstorms after extreme heat gave way to severe storms, strong wind gusts, lightning, and localized downpours.
According to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), temperatures reached as high as 44.7°C (112.5°F) in Cieza, with other areas including Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz also exceeding 44°C before the storms developed.
The storms mainly affected the Vega del Segura, Northwest, and Guadalentín Valley areas. Weather officials also reported a heat burst in Lorca, with wind gusts of up to 50 km/h (31 mph), while a wet downburst north of Murcia brought powerful winds that caused damage in several locations.
