“The president is mistaken”: Governor of Puerto Rico responds to Trump’s stance on statehood for the Island
Puerto Rico.- Governor Jenniffer González Colón responded this Thursday to the recent statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who again rejected the possibility of Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state of the North American nation.
Trump asserted that the annexation of the Island “would be a disaster“, a position that was criticized by the Puerto Rican president during an interview given to Noticentro, of WAPA TV.
“**The president is mistaken about that. The reality is that President Reagan himself said it would be beneficial for the United States and for Puerto Rico to become a state,**” González Colón maintained.
The governor once again defended statehood as a political status formula for the Island and recalled that several American leaders have historically supported that alternative.
Trump’s expressions revive the debate about the political future, a topic that continues to generate divisions both on the Island and in political sectors of the United States.
