The Supreme Court authorizes Bolsonaro to have an ultrasound in the room where he is serving his sentence

São Paulo. – The Supreme Court authorized former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) to undergo an ultrasound at the Federal Police headquarters where he is serving his sentence to assess the need for surgery, local media reported. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case in the Supreme Court, authorized the examination to be carried out with a portable ultrasound machine in the room where Bolsonaro is being held, in order to verify the existence of a bilateral inguinal hernia to assess the need for surgery. The magistrate responded to a request filed by the defense of the former president, who had requested permission to leave the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia, in order to enter the hospital for surgery. Furthermore, when analyzing the requirement, De Moraes pointed out that, according to previous judicial determinations, visits from already registered doctors do not require prior communication, as long as the legal and judicial provisions already established are considered. Bolsonaro, 70 years old, suffers from sporadic hiccups, early-stage skin cancer, and also from the after-effects of previous surgeries in the abdominal region, due to a stabbing he suffered in 2018, when he was in the middle of the campaign for the elections that brought him to power that same year. The former president, sentenced to 27 years in prison, has been at Police headquarters since the end of November, when he was arrested after trying to get rid of, with the help of a welder, the electronic ankle bracelet that had been previously imposed on him by the Supreme Court. From that moment on, the defense and the political leader’s own family have insisted judicially and publicly that he be granted humanitarian house arrest due to his repeated health problems.
