Trump threatens greater military force against Iran if there is no agreement and after an exchange of fire in Hormuz

Washington.- United States President Donald Trump warned this Thursday that could use «more force and more violence» against Iran if an agreement is not signed soon, after an exchange of attacks in the Strait of Hormuz that Tehran denounced as a violation of the ceasefire unilaterally decreed by the Republican president.

Despite the crossfire, the president told ABC -that the ceasefire in Iran “remains in effect” and described what happened as “a little love tap” when journalist Rachael Soctt asked him about it by phone. “No, the ceasefire continues. It is in effect,” added the Republican during the interview with the network. In addition, the president stated that three U.S. destroyers completed the transit through the Strait of Hormuz without incident.

U.S. claims to have destroyed Iranian command centers

Earlier, U.S. Central Command said it attacked “command and control” centers and Iranian military facilities after Iranian forces launched missiles, drones, and fast boats against U.S. destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the Central Command’s statement, Iranian forces launched “multiple missiles, drones, and small boats” against the destroyers USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason as they traversed the international maritime route connecting the Strait of Hormuz with the Gulf of Oman. The command stated that it “does not seek an escalation,” although it warned that it remains prepared to protect American forces in the region.

A Violation of the Ceasefire in Hormuz, According to Iran

According to Fox News, senior military officials have confirmed that the US attacks were recorded in the Iranian port of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas, as well as at the naval checkpoint of Bandar Kargan, in Minab. For its part, Iran released a statement in state media alleging that the US military violated the ceasefire by carrying out attacks against Bandar Jamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island, south of the Islamic republic. In a statement reported by the Tasnim agency, spokespersons for the Jatam al Anbiya General Headquarters reported that the attack occurred against an Iranian tanker that was moving away from the coast of the Islamic Republic to head towards the Strait of Hormuz in the waters of the Jask region, and against another ship that was precisely crossing the strait near the port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Iranian Army “responded immediately by attacking U.S. military vessels in the area east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of the port of Chabahar, causing significant damage,” the statement added. In a subsequent message, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard described its response to the “violation of the ceasefire” as a “broad and precise operation” that involved the deployment of destroyers to the strait, as well as the use of ballistic missiles and drones with multiple warheads.

The new attacks come after weeks of a ceasefire decreed on April 8 unilaterally by US President Donald Trump, pending a peace agreement with Tehran. The day before the attacks recorded today, the president had assured that he saw “very possible” that a peace agreement would be reached.
