Unemployment in Japan rose to 2.6% in August

Tokyo.- The unemployment rate in Japan stood at 2.6% in August, an increase of two tenths compared to the revised data from the previous month, the Japanese government reported this Friday. According to data published by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the number of unemployed in Japan in the eighth month of the year was 1.82 million, which represents an increase of 130,000 people or 7.7% compared to July, and an increase of 70,000 individuals or 4% year-on-year.

The number of employed people in the Asian country decreased in August to 68.35 million, 150,000 fewer than in the previous month, or a 0.2% intermonthly decline, but with an increase of 200,000 individuals compared to the same month of 2024, 0.2% more year-on-year.

The number of available jobs per 100 people seeking employment in Japan was 120, a figure that highlights the persistent rigidity of the Japanese labor market and represents an obstacle to the growth of the world’s fourth-largest economy, mired in an accelerated process of demographic aging and where an increasing number of companies are grappling with labor shortages.
