Residents of Kenscoff, Haiti, took to the streets to protest the lack of security following the armed attack carried out on the night of August 23, which left dozens of people dead and sparked renewed outrage against the authorities.
The demonstration came after armed groups raided the community, including a church being used as a shelter for displaced people who had already fled violence elsewhere. Kenscoff Mayor Massillon Jean said around 40 bodies had been counted, while the United Nations later reported 47 deaths and 22 injuries, warning that the figures could change as searches continue.
Residents accused authorities of failing to protect them and called for the resignation of the local police chief, arguing that the attack occurred close to a police station.
The Haitian government condemned the attack and announced that reinforcements would be deployed to restore security in Kenscoff. The community has experienced repeated attacks by armed groups, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.
The latest violence further deepens Haiti’s security and humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations estimating that nearly 1.5 million people are internally displaced across the country.
