COE reduces green alert and maintains surveillance for rains in Puerto Plata

Santo Domingo. – The Emergency Operations Center (COE) Directorate reported that, according to the meteorological bulletin issued by the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), the continuation of weak to moderate rains is expected, accompanied by wind gusts, in several provinces of the country, due to the cloudy remnants of a frontal system located over Puerto Rico and the moderate northwest wind. According to the report, rainfall could be recorded during the afternoon in locations in the provinces of San Juan, Valverde, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal, Santiago, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, Samaná, La Altagracia, Barahona, El Seibo and Santo Domingo, as well as in nearby communities.

Due to the decrease in predicted rainfall and in accordance with the provisions of Law 147-02 on Risk Management, the COE informed that it modified the green alert level, maintaining it only for the province of Puerto Plata, due to the possibility of rising rivers, streams and ravines, as well as sudden or urban floods. Also, the agency discontinued the green alert level for the provinces of La Romana, La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, Samaná, El Seibo, San Pedro de Macorís, Monte Plata, San Cristóbal, as well as for the National District and Santo Domingo province. Regarding maritime conditions, the COE warned that on the Atlantic coast, operators of fragile, small, and medium-sized vessels should remain in port from Manzanillo Bay, in Monte Cristi, to Cabo Engaño, in La Altagracia, due to dangerous waves and strong winds. The civil protection agency reiterated to the population the importance of staying alert to official bulletins and following the recommendations of the authorities, urging residents in vulnerable areas, especially those near rivers, streams, and ravines, to take the necessary preventive measures in the face of possible rises and floods. He also recommended refraining from crossing bodies of water with high volumes and avoiding the use of spas in the provinces that remain under alert.
