Pelegrín Castillo calls Chancellery’s statement on conflict with Iran “out of place”

The president of the National Progressive Force (FNP), Pelegrín Castillo, questioned the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, in which the Dominican Government repudiated Iran’s counterattacks and called for dialogue after the death of the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Jamenei. The political leader described the official stance as “regrettable and out of place”, considering that a responsible analysis of the conflict in the Middle East must recognize, according to what he stated, the role that the regime of the Islamic Revolution of Iran has played in regional destabilization and in actions linked to international terrorism.

Castillo maintained that the position of the Chancellery omits historical background that, in his opinion, has influenced the prolonged crisis in the region. In that sense, he pointed out that Tehran has represented an obstacle to normalization processes such as the Abraham Accords and to strategic initiatives of cooperation and international connectivity. Likewise, he recalled the hostile rhetoric that has characterized Iranian leadership for decades, including slogans against the United States and Israel, which, he indicated, reflects a foreign policy based on confrontation. He also expressed concerns about the Iranian nuclear program and the role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, questioning the enrichment of uranium above 20%.

Finally, the president of the FNP stated that Dominican foreign policy must act with greater strategic clarity in the face of complex international scenarios, warning that communiqués such as the one issued could generate ambiguous interpretations about the country’s position on global security issues.
