Santo Domingo.- The Senate president,
Ricardo de los Santos, called on all political parties in the country to act responsibly and respect the legal deadlines for the pre-campaign, highlighting that not only the Modern Revolutionary Party
(PRM) must adhere to the warnings of President Luis Abinader about early campaigning.
“This is something never seen before, we haven’t finished coming out of an electoral process and we are already in campaigns. It’s not just the pre-candidates of the PRM, it’s
all the political parties that are in that,” said the legislator, in supporting the ultimatum given by Abinader to the officials seeking elective positions.
De los Santos insisted that the message from the president, who asked public servants aspiring to a position to leave their posts if they want to campaign, should serve as an example for the entire Dominican political system.
“Luis Abinader can call the attention of PRM colleagues, but that should serve all parties. Whoever wants to dedicate themselves to their proselytizing, let them leave the public administration and have all the space to do so,” he pointed out.
Likewise, he recalled that the
Electoral Regime Law empowers the Central Electoral Board to regulate the political calendar, clearly establishing that the pre-campaign begins in July of the pre-election year and ends with the primaries in October.
“We are totally behind schedule, not just the PRM, all the parties are in that now.”
The senator’s pronouncement comes after President
Abinader‘s message, who warned on Tuesday that he will not allow proselytizing acts from the government.
During an event in Montecristi, Abinader reiterated that there can be no campaign or proselytism in public offices, highlighting that the duty of officials is to address the problems of the citizenry.
The presidential warning occurs in a context where several high-ranking officials have begun to publicly express their aspirations for the 2028 elections. Among the possible pre-candidates of the PRM who are emerging are Mayor Carolina Mejía, the Minister of Tourism David Collado, the director of Inapa Wellington Arnaud, the head of Customs Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón, the president of Indotel Guido Gómez Mazara, Vice President Raquel Peña, among others.
