Washington.- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, shared this Saturday in a message on his Truth Social network a map of Venezuela in which the Caribbean country appeared painted with the American flag and with the caption “51st State.”
It is not the first time that the leader has toyed with the idea of the annexation of Venezuela to the United States since, on January 3rd, U.S. military forces captured the man who was president of the country, Nicolás Maduro, and transferred him to New York, where he has remained ever since awaiting the start of a federal trial against him for narcoterrorism.
On May 12, in statements to the television network Fox, Trump claimed that he was “seriously considering” making the Caribbean country the 51st state and, the following day, he uploaded to his social network a map of Venezuela shaded with the stars and stripes flag.

Since Maduro’s capture, the United States has exercised tutelage over the government of interim president Delcy Rodríguez, with the ultimate goal of achieving a democratic transition in Venezuela, but it has not established an electoral calendar.
In fact, Trump stated this Friday that Venezuela is still not “prepared” to hold elections, but assured that there has been “progress” in that regard.
He added, furthermore, that “Delcy has been doing a fantastic job” and highlighted the benefit that both U.S. companies and the Venezuelan people are achieving from the oil market.
Trump’s message on his social network comes at a time when the Venezuelan Parliament and a group of opposition members have announced that they will begin talks, supported by Washington, starting this Saturday to promote democracy in the country.
In addition to Venezuela, Trump often refers to the possibility of making Canada the 51st state and has even hinted at it regarding Greenland.
