The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating an active outbreak of Salmonella Newport that has sickened at least 84 people across the country.
The investigation was added to the FDA’s official list of active foodborne illness outbreaks on August 26, 2026. The agency has begun traceback efforts to determine what food or product may be linked to the infections.
So far, the FDA has not identified a specific food or product as the source of the outbreak and has not issued a related recall. The agency also has not publicly released information about the victims’ ages, locations, hospitalizations or possible deaths.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, with symptoms typically beginning between six hours and six days after infection.
