The new head of the US diplomatic mission to Venezuela, Laura Dogu, arrived this Saturday in the South American country to advance the restoration of bilateral relations, suspended in 2019.
“I have just arrived in Venezuela. My team and I are ready to work”, wrote on the X account of the North American nation’s External Office in Venezuela.

Dogu, who previously served as ambassador to Nicaragua (2015-2018) and Honduras (2022-2025), will assume as chargé d’affaires in Caracas. Venezuela broke off its bilateral relations with Washington in 2019, after the Donald Trump administration recognized Juan Guaidó as “president” of the South American country. The bilateral approach occurred after the U.S. attack on January 3 against Venezuelan territory, which culminated in the kidnapping of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro. Just six days after the aggression, senior U.S. diplomats traveled to Venezuela, which announced that day the beginning of an “exploratory process of a diplomatic nature” with the North American nation, aimed at the “reestablishment of diplomatic missions in both countries”.
