Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay’s father will take his place in the presidential dispute

Bogotá.- Miguel Uribe Londoño, father of the murdered senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, will take his place as a presidential pre-candidate for the right-wing Centro Democrático party, the political force, the main opposition to President Gustavo Petro, reported this Friday. According to the Democratic Center, Uribe Londoño himself requested to be allowed to “enter the selection process of the presidential candidate of the Democratic Center party representing the entire family of Miguel Uribe Turbay”. “Considering the above, the Democratic Center Party and its presidential pre-candidates welcome Mr. Miguel Uribe Londoño, who as of today enters the process of selecting the presidential candidate” for the 2026 elections.

In this way, Uribe Londoño, who had a stint in politics in the 90s, joins senators María Fernanda Cabal, Paloma Valencia, Paola Holguín and Andrés Guerra, who aspire to obtain the nomination of the party founded and led by former President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) for next year’s presidential elections.

Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39 years old and the fifth member of that list, passed away on August 11th, two months after being seriously injured by two shots to the head in an attack perpetrated on June 7th in Bogotá.

In his son’s funeral, Uribe Londoño gave some words in which he pointed out that “Miguel’s ideas are more current than ever”, condemned the violence and called to “stop this madness in 2026”, the year in which legislative and presidential elections will be held in the country. “The Democratic Center Party will define its presidential candidate between December 2025 and January 2026 through an international survey” and the chosen one will participate on March 8th in a consultation with other right-wing forces “to choose a single candidate from a popular-based democratic unity that will rebuild the democratic path of the nation,” the statement added.
