A 35-year-old woman has been accused of attempting to kill her two children, ages 3 and 6, after authorities found the boys severely injured and alone inside a home in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

The woman, identified as Taylor Gosnell, faces two counts of attempted murder and two additional charges for possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. A judge denied her bond.

Investigators allege Gosnell attacked the children with a knife and a blunt object during the night or early morning of Saturday, September 26. The two children suffered around 50 stab wounds between them, some of which were deep enough to reach the bone, according to authorities.

The 6-year-old suffered the most serious injuries, particularly to one arm. Prosecutors said the damage is so severe that an amputation could be necessary. Both children remain hospitalized under protective care, and despite the severity of their injuries, they are expected to survive.

The case came to light after the 6-year-old called his grandmother. According to the account released by local media, the boy told her that he and his sister were alone and that he was hungry.
