Supporters of Evo Morales hold protests over the crisis in Bolivia and to force his candidacy

Bolivia.- Supporters of former Bolivian President, Evo Morales, are holding massive protests due to the economic crisis affecting the country and to force his candidacy for the presidential elections called for August 17.

This Tuesday at least ten roadblocks were registered on Bolivian roads, while Morales’ supporters announced the massification of these pickets.

The Minister of Government (Security), Roberto Ríos, indicated that the underlying reason for the protest is to stop the holding of elections and held the coca grower leader responsible for what he considers a “boycott”.

Likewise, the Minister of Public Works, Édgar Montaño, stated that former President Evo Morales can only return to power through a coup d’état and that the mobilizations promoted by his followers only seek to ‘convulse’ the country.

Montaño warned that the installation of blockades will generate economic damages to different sectors and that, in addition, will lead to an increase in prices of several products, including those of the basic food basket.

For two years, Bolivia has been going through a complicated financial situation marked by a lack of dollars, periods of fuel scarcity, and a significant increase in the prices of the basic food basket and the cost of living.

It is recalled that the former president faces legal impediments to dispute the Presidency, due to judicial sentences that limit the exercise of the Presidency to only two terms, continuous or discontinuous, and Morales was president of the country for three terms (2006-2010, 2010-2014 and 2014-2019).
