The death toll rises to six, and over a hundred are injured by an explosion in northwestern Syria.

Beirut.- The death toll from the explosion that occurred this Thursday in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib has risen to six and the number of injured exceeds one hundred, while rescue efforts continue without the causes of the explosion being known yet, various sources reported.

The aid organization known as the White Helmets confirmed on its X account the death of six civilians in the incident, which occurred in the area of Maarrat Misrin, but warned that it is only a “preliminary” assessment and that its teams are still searching for more victims among the rubble.

“We urge the people of Idlib to avoid approaching the site of the explosion for their own safety and reaffirm that our teams are working to the best of their abilities amid dangerous and complex conditions,” called the group, recently integrated into the Syrian government. In this regard, Syrian Minister of Emergencies Raed al Saleh explained on the same social network that the area has registered more explosions during the course of rescue operations, which hinders their development and the transfer of the injured. For his part, the head of the Idlib Health Directorate, Samer Arabi, indicated in a statement that the number of injured exceeds one hundred, most of whom were transferred to Maarrat Misrin Hospital, while the rest have been distributed to different centers in the province. At the moment, the causes of the explosion are unknown, which would have originated in an ammunition depot, according to the Human Rights Observatory. In recent months, several military installations or weapons depots belonging to the overthrown Bashar al-Assad regime have suffered similar incidents, sometimes recording spontaneous explosions due to high temperatures or lack of protection measures on site.
