Charros combine power and patience to defeat Federales
Zapopan, Jalisco.— The Charros de Jalisco displayed a forceful offense and took advantage of the rival pitching’s lack of control to defeat the Federales de Chiriquí 11 runs to 4, in the closing of the second day of the Caribbean Series Jalisco 2026, held at the Pan American Stadium.
The local team defined the match from the first third of the game. The victory went to right-hander Luis Iván Rodríguez, who worked five scoreless innings, allowed just two hits and gave up one walk. The loss went to the Panamanian Paolo Espino, punished with eight earned runs in two innings, after tolerating five hits —including two home runs— and giving four walks.
The Charros took control from the first inning with a grand slam by Bligh Madris, after Espino allowed a single by Connor Hollis and walked Michael Wielansky and Willie Calhoun. Madris’s hit represented the 25th grand slam in the history of the Caribbean Series; the previous one had been recorded on February 3, 2021 in Mazatlán, hit by Julián León, of the Tomateros de Culiacán, also against Federales.
The Jalisco offensive exploded again in an extensive third inning of seven runs, in which 12 batters paraded. In that inning, home runs were hit by Julián Ornelas, doubles by Michael Wielansky and Willie Calhoun, a single by Reynaldo Rodríguez, and six walks were negotiated.
Bligh Madris led the attack by driving in four runs, scoring twice, and receiving two walks. Willie Calhoun and Reynaldo Rodriguez contributed two RBIs each.
The Federales, led by José Mayorga, avoided the shutout in the sixth inning thanks to a home run by Johan Camargo, with Austin Dennis on base, against reliever Jeff Ibarra. Subsequently, they added two more runs in the ninth inning against closer Trevor Clifto, with a triple by Adrián Sugastey that sealed the scoreboard.
The Chiriquí pitching staff gave up a total of 11 walks, one short of the historical record for the Caribbean Series, set by Chesterfield (Panama), whose pitchers conceded 12 walks on February 10, 1956 against Elefantes de Cienfuegos, Cuba. The walks were distributed among Paolo Espino (4), Kevin Miranda (4) and Alberto Guerrero (3).
In the first game of the day, the Leones del Escogido, from the Dominican Republic, achieved their second victory by defeating the Cangrejeros de Santurce, from Puerto Rico, 5-3.
After the day’s results, the standings are led by Leones del Escogido (2-0), followed by Cangrejeros de Santurce and Charros de Jalisco (1-1). Tomateros de Culiacán and Federales de Chiriquí have a record of 0-1.
The third day of the Caribbean Series Jalisco 2026 will be played this Tuesday, when the Federales de Chiriquí face the Tomateros de Culiacán (Mexico Verde) at 2:00 p.m., and in the evening match, at 7:00 p.m., the Charros de Jalisco (Mexico Rojo) will face the Cangrejeros de Santurce.
