Ketel Marte, of the Arizona Diamondbacks, with offensive comments related to his deceased mother.

The incident occurred during Tuesday’s game at Guaranteed Rate Field, when Marte, visibly emotionally affected, was consoled by his manager Torey Lovullo and teammate Geraldo Perdomo in the middle of the game. According to reports from ESPN and MLB.com, the fan was identified, admitted the offense, expressed his regret, and was ejected from the stadium.
The mother of Marte, Elpidia Valdez, tragically passed away in a car accident in 2017, an event that deeply marked the player’s life. Since then, Marte honors her memory by looking at the sky after hitting home runs, a gesture that has touched many in baseball.
“I looked at him and knew immediately that it affected him deeply,” Lovullo told the Arizona Republic. “I hugged him and said, ‘I love you, I’m with you. You’re not alone.'”
For his part, Perdomo raised his voice and called for stronger sanctions:
“That can’t happen. He should be suspended from baseball. Everyone knows who Ketel is: he plays with intensity and joy. It hurts me to see him affected like this.”
Despite the incident, Marte responded with character on the field, going 4-2 with a home run in the first inning, contributing to Arizona’s 4-1 victory. The player is having one of the best seasons of his career, with a batting average of .320, 15 home runs, and an offensive line of .424/.608, positioning himself as a serious candidate for the National League Most Valuable Player.
