MLB Recap: Luis Severino shines with eight strikeouts and leads the Athletics to victory

Santo Domingo – Dominican pitcher Luis Severino signed a standout performance this Thursday by striking out eight batters in seven solid innings, to lead the Oakland Athletics’ 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros. Mexican Luis Urías backed the pitching work with a home run and two hits.

Severino (4-11) allowed only four hits and two earned runs, thus cutting a streak of four consecutive losses for his team. Mason Miller took care of closing the game and achieved his 20th save of the season. Urías connected his eighth home run of the campaign in the sixth inning, while Nick Kurts contributed a run-scoring double in a two-run fourth inning. Max Schuemann also drove in one with a fielder’s choice. By Houston, Christian Walker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Victor Caratini scored on a groundout by Cam Smith in the seventh, snapping their four-game winning streak. The loser was Jason Alexander (1-1), who allowed five runs and 11 hits in six innings.

Vladdy Jr. leads another Blue Jays victory

In Detroit, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits, including two run-scoring doubles, and the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Tigers 11-4. Ernie Clement and Joey Loperfido hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning, paving the way for Toronto to add their 19th win in the last 24 games. Eric Lauer (6-2) dominated from the mound, allowing only one run in eight solid innings.

San Luis defeats Padres with Latino power

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Diego Padres 9-7 thanks to two three-run home runs hit by Brendan Donovan and Willson Contreras. The Venezuelan catcher finished with four RBIs, while Iván Herrera also shone with a home run and two RBIs. Despite home runs by Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, Yu Darvish (0-3) took the loss. Rodriguez and Polanco lead Seattle victory In another game, Dominicans Julio Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco, along with Cuban Randy Arozarena, hit home runs in the Seattle Mariners’ 4-2 victory over the Angels. Logan Evans (4-3) won the game after five quality innings, and Andrés Muñoz closed with his 23rd save. Rodríguez made history by becoming the first player in MLB with at least 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first four seasons.
