Soto connected two singles and stole pads 37 and 38 of the season, being on the verge of becoming the first player in Mets history to combine
40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in the same campaign. The outfielder has 43 home runs in 2025.
However, the most prominent role fell to Alcántara (11-12), who worked seven solid innings, limiting New York’s offense to two runs, seven hits, and a couple of walks, while striking out three. His quality start was key for Miami to come back in the fifth inning with a six-run rally, punishing rookie
Brandon Sproat.
The Marlins’ attack included an RBI single by
Troy Johnston, a triple by
Heriberto Hernández that tied the game, and a two-run homer by
Connor Norby that finished tilting the balance.
With the defeat, the Mets complicated their outlook in the fight for the
last National League wild card spot, falling under the pressure of the Cincinnati Reds, who have the advantage in the direct tiebreaker.
By New York, Soto went 4-2 with a run scored, while
Ronny Mauricio went 0-2. For Miami,
