Phoenix.— Nick Pivetta pitched a gem of seven innings and Fernando Tatis Jr. unleashed a demolishing offense with four hits, guiding the San Diego Padres to an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks this Sunday, to end a three-game losing streak.
Right-hander Pivetta (7-2) completely dominated the Arizona lineup, allowing just two hits and one walk, in addition to striking out nine. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, solidifying a performance that gave oxygen to a rotation in need of solidity after a painful loss on Saturday.
San Diego’s offense responded forcefully. Tatis Jr., who also stole a base, scored three times and led the attack alongside Venezuelan Elias Díaz, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Jake Cronenworth also contributed with a home run, while Manny Machado drove in two runs in a day of collective production.
Luis Arráez hit a run-producing double in the fifth inning, crowning a key inning in which the Padres began to pull away on the scoreboard. The Venezuelan infielder finished the game 1-for-5 with one RBI.
For Arizona, starter Merrill Kelly (6-3) worked five innings in which he allowed seven hits and four runs, although he struck out seven. His team saw a five-game winning streak snapped and concluded their homestand with a 5-1 record before going on a nine-game road trip.
The Diamondbacks scored their only two runs in the eighth inning against Anthony DeSclafani, who relieved Pivetta. Eugenio Suárez was the most outstanding for the home team, going 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
With this victory, the Padres hope to get back on the path to success in their fight to stay in the race in the National League West Division.
