MANAGUA, Nicaragua. After learning of the sanction of two official FIBA games, the Dominican player David Jones offered a public apology through his social media, expressing his regret for what happened and assuming responsibility for his actions.

“Violence is never the answer. At the end of the game things got out of control after an Argentinian player hit me and another teammate received racist insults. Adrenaline took over, but I take responsibility for my actions. I want to apologize to everyone — to my country, to FIBA, to the San Antonio Spurs, to the Argentinian people and to everyone who follows and supports basketball,” Jones declared.

The player, who was recently selected by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, took the opportunity to call for unity among Latin American athletes:

“As Latinos we must support each other, grow together and continue to promote the sport we love so much. Experiences like this help me grow and strengthen my emotional intelligence. I will always represent the Dominican Republic with pride and give my best,” added the Dominican guard.

In addition to the sanction against Jones, FIBA applied disciplinary measures to other Dominican and Argentinian players, and both federations, with fines and suspensions aimed at preserving integrity and respect in the competition. The AmeriCup 2025 will continue its development according to the established schedule, while the Dominican Basketball Federation (FEDOMBAL) reaffirmed its commitment to the discipline and fair play in representation of the country.
