Tehran (EFE).- The Iranian national football team is preparing for the World Cup that will be held this summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico and will hold a training camp in Turkey, in addition to playing two friendly matches, said the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mahdi Taj.

“We are preparing to participate in the World Cup. We boycott the United States, but we do not boycott the World Cup,” Taj pointed out in statements collected this Wednesday by the Mehr news agency. Following the outbreak of the conflict in the Middle East, motivated by the military intervention of the United States and Israel at the beginning of this month and the death of the Iranian supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, in one of the bombings, the Tehran regime threatened not to participate in the championship as the U.S. is one of the organizers. However, the authorities of the Persian country are negotiating for their national team’s matches in group G to be played in Mexico, instead of in the US cities where they were scheduled to face New Zealand (June 15), Belgium (June 21), both in Los Angeles, and Egypt (June 26), in Seattle. Taj, who did not specify the opponents for the friendly matches, made these statements at the welcoming ceremony for the women’s national team at the Bazargan border, in northwestern Iran. The women’s team returned after participating in the Asian Cup in Australia, where several of its players requested asylum.
Taj remarked that the members of the football team “gave a great response to the enemies.” “Today the women returned proudly to the homeland,” he added.
