Firefighters have already brought under control 70% of the fire declared this weekend in the Aljezur area in the Algarve, southern Portugal, where at least nine people have suffered minor injuries, the commander Abel Gomes of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) in that region reported this Monday.
In a press conference, Gomes specified that the slightly injured are six firefighters and three civilians and that, although the flames are largely under control, the authorities are closely monitoring to prevent them from reigniting.
Meanwhile, the fire continues to advance along an 8-kilometer front that has not yet been brought under control.
According to the latest data from the ANEPC, there are 523 firefighters deployed, supported by 185 land vehicles and ten aerial resources.
This fire is affecting a portion of the so-called ‘Mata Nacional’ of Barão de São João, which is a protected natural area.
Gomes added that during yesterday’s day the authorities evacuated some people from their homes, who have spent the night in shelters in Aljezur and Lagos and who have already returned to their homes.
