Heavy monsoon rains triggered severe flooding and landslides in Nepal, leaving at least 95 people dead, while Chinese authorities reported a high number of casualties and people missing in Tibet, near the border.
Floodwaters swept through homes, vehicles and other structures in several areas of Nuwakot district. Witnesses described scenes of devastation as torrents of water and mud moved through the mountainous valleys.
Nepalese authorities have deployed helicopters and emergency teams to conduct search-and-rescue operations. Around 430 megawatts of electricity generation capacity were also affected by damage to production, transmission and distribution infrastructure.
On the Tibetan side, Chinese state media reported that a mudslide in the border area caused a high number of casualties and missing people, although no official death toll has been released.
Experts cited by Euronews said a possible rock-and-ice avalanche in Nepal may have blocked the Lhende River, triggering a flash flood that spread toward the border region.
