Santo Domingo.– Between 2,000 and 3,000 teachers could begin the next school year under temporary contracts, according to estimates from the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP), which insists on the need to open a new competitive examination to fill the available positions.
The union warns that the educational system maintains vacancies in different areas and that, due to the lack of appointments, some teachers continue to work under a modality that limits their job stability.
The ADP maintains that the competitive examination must be the mechanism to select the teachers who will fill the positions, considering that this process allows for the assessment of their merits and capabilities.
“We believe in the competitive bidding process, because that guarantees that I don’t have to look for a friend, a friend who sends me a little card,” expressed a union representative.
Before calling for a new process, the organization asked the Ministry of Education to appoint the teachers who have already passed previous evaluations and remain in the pool of eligible candidates.
“Those 800 or 900 who are on the eligible list, who have an acquired right, let them be appointed. And from there, then the competition is called and we proceed,” he maintained.
The ADP has also pointed out that the educational system requires thousands of new teachers in areas such as Mathematics, Primary Education, Languages, Physical Education, and Natural Sciences.

For the guild, temporary hiring can serve to cover immediate staffing needs, but it does not represent a definitive solution for teachers seeking stability.
“The contract is for 9 months and it also does not have Social Security benefits,” he explained.
The organization argues that permanent appointments allow educators to access Social Security benefits and accumulate contributions for their retirement.
