Air India confirms the death of 241 people on board and one survivor in the accident

India.- The airline Air India confirmed the death of 241 people on board the plane that crashed this Thursday in the city of Ahmedabad, in western India, and indicated that there is a “only survivor” who is hospitalized.

The survivor is a British man of Indian origin and that among the passengers there were 169 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese and one Canadian. “Our efforts are now fully focused on the needs of all those affected, their families and loved ones. And we are fully cooperating with the authorities investigating this incident,” the airline reported.

The plane, a Boeing 787 flying to Gatwick Airport, was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members when it crashed just after takeoff in a residential area. The Police put the number of bodies recovered at 268 and indicated that in addition to the victims of the plane, at least 27 people died on the ground due to the impact of the aircraft against a medical students’ residence. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah attributed the high loss of life to a fire following the impact. “The plane was carrying almost 125,000 liters of fuel and, due to the high temperature, there was no possibility of saving anyone,” he stated in a press conference after visiting the scene.
