Councilman Ramón Altagracia demands explanation from Betty Gerónimo for suspension of Carnival in SDN

Santo Domingo.– During an extraordinary session of the Council of Councilors of the Santo Domingo Norte City Council (ASDN), the councilor of the Fuerza del Pueblo, Ramón Altagracia, urged Mayor Betty Gerónimo to offer an immediate explanation to the carnival participants and the citizenry regarding the suspension of the 2026 Carnival, considering the cancellation of this traditional cultural event unjustified.

Altagracia expressed her concern about the decision, pointing out that it is one of the most anticipated celebrations by the municipal residents, who each year actively participate in troupes, parades, and various manifestations of Dominican popular culture. “The municipal authorities of Santo Domingo Norte deserve a formal explanation about the reasons that led to the suspension of the carnival. It is a deeply rooted tradition that energizes culture, tourism, and the local economy,” he affirmed.

He also highlighted that the carnival represents history, identity and tradition for the municipality, in addition to mobilizing hundreds of people and generating a space for healthy recreation for families. The councilor also suggested that the municipal authorities should consider financial compensation for the carnival participants, due to the resources invested in the preparation of troupes and the elaboration of costumes.

“The mayor should not appear indifferent to this situation that directly affects the carnival participants, without offering a clear explanation to justify the suspension,” he pointed out.
