Venezuelan opposition figure Edmundo González Urrutia has spoken with former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González about the democratic transition in Venezuela following the American military intervention and the transfer of Nicolás Maduro to the U.S., where he is accused of drug trafficking and other crimes. “Democratic transition processes are neither linear nor simple. They require experience, historical vision, and the ability to distinguish between the urgent and the essential,” González Urrutia wrote on the X network this Tuesday. Democracy, the message continues, is built with “firm principles and responsible decisions, even in the most complex contexts”.

González Urrutia, exiled in Spain since September 2024, thanks Felipe González for this “good conversation”, which he illustrates with several photographs of the meeting. He was the presidential candidate of the main anti-Chavista coalition in July 2024, but the official election result gave Maduro the victory for a new term amid opposition accusations of “massive fraud”.
