El Salvador has begun to consolidate itself as a key player within the new security strategy promoted by the United States in the Western Hemisphere, especially in the fight against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime. The participation of Salvadoran authorities in regional security meetings has been highlighted by US officials as part of a strategic alliance that seeks to strengthen military and operational cooperation between countries of the continent. During an international conference held in Florida, organized around the fight against drug cartels, representatives from eighteen countries discussed new ways to confront what Washington calls “narcoterrorism”. The event was attended by Salvadoran ministers of Defense and Security, who supported the US strategy based on coordinated and more aggressive actions against criminal organizations. The U.S. Secretary of Defense emphasized that the goal is for the countries of the region to act jointly to confront these threats. According to the approach proposed by the U.S. administration, the fight against cartels should no longer rely solely on “judicial processes or economic sanctions”, but on a response that includes military cooperation and multinational operations to neutralize these groups.

U.S. government advisors stated that the new doctrine seeks to treat cartels as terrorist organizations, which would allow the use of broader military tools in the region. In that context, El Salvador appears as one of the partners most aligned with this strategy, due to its internal security policy and its willingness to participate in regional initiatives.The meeting also marked the beginning of a stage in which several countries in the hemisphere committed to deepen cooperation in intelligence, operations, and territorial control, with the aim of dismantling criminal networks operating across multiple borders. For Washington, this coordination will be key to reinforcing regional security and consolidating a bloc of allies against drug trafficking.
