Mi-17 helicopter tragedy in Arequipa: the 15 occupants identified, including wives and children of FAP personnel

Arequipa, Peru. – Authorities have confirmed the identification of the 15 people who died in the accident of the Mi-17 helicopter of the Peruvian Air Force (FAP), found crashed this Monday in an area near the town of Chala Viejo, in the province of Caravelí, Arequipa region. The helicopter, which lost contact while carrying out support work in the face of the intense rains and floods affecting the south of the country, had on board four crew members and eleven passengers, including several minors and relatives of the personnel. Among the deceased are Major FAP Sergio Danner Paucar Centurión, Second Lieutenant FAP Luis Fernando Huertas Cárcamo, First Sergeant Kamila Anchapuri Jove and Second Sergeant Leiner Aguirre Huamán, all members of the crew. In addition, among the passengers were FAP Colonel Javier Nole Gonzales, his wife and their two children, as well as other minors and adults who also lost their lives in the tragedy.

The FAP has expressed its deep sorrow for the loss of its members and the civilians who were traveling on the mission, and has announced comprehensive support for the families of the victims. Likewise, a national mourning was declared while assistance work is activated and investigations into what happened continue. The accident occurred amidst a context of heavy rains that have generated floods and overflows in various areas of Arequipa, which is why the aircraft was traveling to assist in emergency and damage assessment efforts.
