Taylor Swift faces a lawsuit for alleged trademark infringement related to the title of her most recent album, The Life of a Showgirl, according to legal documents cited by the media outlet TMZ.
The legal action was filed by Maren Wade, who claims that the album’s name and associated promotional material infringe upon a trademark she claims to have developed for over a decade under the title “Confessions of a Showgirl.”
According to the lawsuit, Wade claims he began managing this project in 2014 as the name of a weekly column published in Las Vegas Weekly.
The plaintiff claims to have officially registered the trademark in 2015. In that context, she argues that there is similarity between “Confessions of a Showgirl” and The Life of a Showgirl, pointing out that both expressions share a comparable structure and a similar “overall commercial impression.”
Furthermore, she asserted that she has toured with a theatrical show of the same name in which she presents “sincere and often humorous accounts of the challenges and absurd situations of a career in the entertainment industry, from getting trapped inside a giant birthday cake to imitating a Madonna impersonator.”
In court documents, Maren Wade also argues that Swift’s team would have knowledge of trademark law and the existence of her previous project.
Even so, according to their version, the artist and her collaborators would have continued using the album title.
In fact, it is known that the United States Patent and Trademark Office rejected last year Taylor Swift’s application to register the federal trademark “Life of a Showgirl” for “musical performances and live entertainment services,” alleging possible confusion with “Confessions of a Showgirl.”
Also, Wade’s lawyer, Jaymie Parkkinen, said that “they have great respect for Swift’s talent and success, but trademark law exists to ensure that creators of all levels can protect what they have built.”
The lawsuit includes a request for a court order to prevent Taylor Swift, her representation team, her record label, and her business partners from using the name The Life of a Showgirl in products and services.
Likewise, Wade is claiming financial compensation for the alleged damages arising from the use of the name.
According to the legal text, the plaintiff considers that the commercial presence of the album and its associated products could generate confusion among the public, to the point that their own project is perceived as an imitation or derivation of the singer’s work.
The case also mentions Maren’s social media activity, where, according to reports, there are previous posts showing content related to Swift’s music, including messages with references to her songs.
As of yet, there has been no official response from Taylor Swift‘s team. The Life of a Showgirl is the artist’s twelfth album, which went on sale in October and broke streaming records on Spotify, becoming the best-selling album of 2025.
