Los Angeles.- The U.S. Department of Education demanded this Thursday that the Democratic states of California and Washington update their policies on gender identity, following recent court rulings that declare unconstitutional the guidelines that force educators to hide information from parents about their children’s transition.

“California and Washington maintain policies and guidelines—and have even taken legal action against their own school districts—to pressure schools and educators to hide student records from parents,” the U.S. government stated in a press release.

This requirement responds to recent federal court rulings that determined that parents hold primary authority in upbringing and that state guidelines to conceal gender transition violate their constitutional rights.

Court decisions “have reinforced the Department’s commitment to protecting students from radical indoctrination in K-12 schools,” the document added.

“Schools must put an end to the practice of hiding vital information about students from the parents who love them,” stated Frank Miller, director of the Student Privacy Policy Office.

The Office further demanded that both states immediately detail their regulatory review plans.

This measure is part of an offensive by President Donald Trump’s administration against two Democratic strongholds that began last year with the first state investigations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which grants the Department of Education the authority to inspect records and control their disclosure.
