Santo Domingo.- Following the recent and shocking cases of
multiple sexual assaults that have occurred in the country, Deputy Elpidio Infante spoke in favor of implementing chemical castration as a measure against repeat sexual offenders.
Referring to the situation, Infante stated:
“Those are the few cases that come out, here group orgies of young people in the cabins have existed for a long time, with the new Code I think people are going to think a little about committing those misdeeds, I agree that it should be punished and I understand that for these cases castration of the individual should exist”.
The legislator added that the root of these problems also lies in the lack of values that must be cultivated from childhood. He emphasized that training in homes is fundamental and warned that social networks have negatively influenced young people, contributing to the social breakdown that gives rise to this type of behavior.
The most recent case occurred in the Los Tres Brazos sector, Santo Domingo Este municipality, where five men voluntarily surrendered after being accused of the sexual assault against a 16-year-old adolescent.
The detainees were identified as Julio José Mateo (25), Brailyn Cepeda Ramírez (19), Harolin José Martínez (18), Omar Reyes Vásquez (19), and Yoel Morrobel, alias El Matatán, whose surrender occurred through a media outlet.
Similarly, in Santiago, a judge imposed 18 months of preventive prison as a coercive measure against six men accused of gang-raping a young woman from the municipality of Villa González, and declared the case as complex.
The defendants in this process are José Alfonso Rubiera Rodríguez (Fonso), Delfri de Jesús Rodríguez (Yiyo), Edwin Manuel Castro Guzmán (el Guaro), Javier Eduardo Núñez Toribio and/or Javier Núñez (Bebé), Oniel Rafael Pichardo Martínez (Contreras) and Yamir Fernando Pérez Toribio (Ferrere).
Chemical castration is a subject of debate in the Dominican Republic; it is not an established or legal practice in the country, however, there have been legislative proposals to include it within the country’s penal code.
