Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Society of Pediatrics issued a statement in which it alerts the population about professional intrusion in the approach to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and urges parents and guardians to carefully verify the credentials of the specialists who treat children and adolescents.

In the specific case of patients with ASD, the society recommends confirming that the treating professional is a pediatrician, pediatric neurologist, child psychiatrist, or a duly qualified clinical psychologist. Likewise, it urges to verify that they are registered with the Ministry of Public Health and/or the Dominican Medical College. The organization also called for distrust of ambiguous titles such as “autism specialist” that do not have recognized university support, considering that this type of practice can put the health and well-being of minors at risk. The Dominican Society of Pediatrics reiterated its commitment to the protection of Dominican children and the promotion of medical care based on scientific evidence and official regulations.
