DR hosts the XIII Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Trade Unionists

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic is the host of the XIII Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Trade Unionists (ELACS), which brings together more than 250 union leaders from the region, was inaugurated in the main hall of the National Cooperative of Multiple Services of Teachers (COOPNAMA). The ELACS has the participation of 117 international union leaders from 18 countries, including Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Cuba, Haiti and the United States, among others. The central theme of the meeting is “The World of Work Today in Latin America and the Caribbean”, addressing crucial sub-themes such as: • Social security (health and retirement).
• Trade union freedom.
• Neoliberal policies.
• Work and technology.
• Situation of migrant workers and the reality of working women. The works of this meeting have been dedicated to the memory of Julio de Peña Valdez, recognized as the most important Dominican union leader of the last 65 years. The tribute takes place a few days before the 38th anniversary of his death, which occurred on September 17, 1987.

Among the special guests at the event are the Minister of Labor, Dr. Eddy Olivares, and the director of INFOTEP, Professor Rafael Santos Badía, along with other union, social, and political leaders of the country. The National Preparatory Committee, which brings together dozens of organizations, highlighted the participation of the Unionist Classist Workers Confederation (UCT), the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP), the National Nursing Association (ASONAEN), and the Federation of Associations of Professors of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (FAPROUASD), among many others. The organizing committee called on workers to enthusiastically participate in this meeting, which promotes unity and class consciousness in the trade union movement.
