Santo Domingo.- For the second consecutive day, the wife and children of businessman Antonio Espaillat appeared this Saturday at the preventive jail of the Palace of Justice of Ciudad Nueva, where the owner of the disappeared Jet Set nightclub has been held since last Thursday, awaiting a coercive measure to be known. Espaillat is accused, along with his sister Maribel Espaillat, of involuntary manslaughter following the collapse of the roof of the nightclub that occurred on April 8th. The tragic event left a balance of more than 230 people dead and at least 189 injured, becoming one of the deadliest events recorded in entertainment venues in the country.

Authorities point to alleged negligence in the building’s structure and operating permits, which has led to formal charges against the owners of the place. The Public Ministry has requested preventive detention as a coercive measure, alleging risk of flight and the seriousness of the case. During today’s proceedings, the businessman’s family avoided making statements to the press, while dozens of people, including relatives of the victims and members of civil society, gathered outside the court demanding justice.
