SANTO DOMINGO, RD. – Former congresswoman Rosa Amalia Pilarte requested through a constitutional review appeal the suspension of the sentence that condemns her to five years in prison, a fine equivalent to 200 minimum wages, and her transfer to the Rafey Mujeres prison in Santiago, for money laundering and financing of terrorism.
The resource, filed by a large team of lawyers headed by Eduardo Jorge Prats and Julio Cury, seeks to halt the execution of the sentence confirmed on August 29 by the plenary of the Supreme Court of Justice, until the Constitutional Court (TC) hears the case.

Legal experts maintain that the precautionary measure is necessary to guarantee due process and avoid irreparable damage to the former legislator’s freedom, arguing that the alleged crimes are economic in nature and do not pose a risk to third parties or public safety.
In parallel, the Supreme Court sent the sentence to the judge in charge of the execution of the sentence in La Vega, while a ministerial official attempted to notify Pilarte at his residence, without success.

For his part, former Deputy Attorney Pedro Inocencio Amador Espinosa, who led the prosecution, described the sentence as a clear message that politics cannot be a refuge for impunity. He recalled that, in addition to imprisonment, the ruling ordered the seizure of more than a dozen properties in La Vega and Jarabacoa, valued at hundreds of millions of pesos.
