The Public Ministry requested this Saturday preventive detention against Antonio Espaillat and house arrest for his sister Maribel Espaillat, for the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set nightclub, an event that left a tragic toll of 236 people dead.
The request was filed just two minutes before 2:00 in the afternoon, just before the legal deadline to submit the file to the permanent attention judge of the Palacio de Justicia de Ciudad Nueva.
Authorities accuse Antonio Espaillat, the establishment’s owner, of serious negligence for ignoring warnings about the structural conditions of the premises. As for Maribel Espaillat, she is charged with administrative complicity for failing to take preventive measures.
The Espaillat brothers remain in custody, awaiting the permanent attention judge’s decision on the measures that will define the course of the judicial process.
