Santo Domingo.- A court imposed three months of preventive detention on a retired National Police captain accused of attempting to kill his sentimental partner with a firearm in the El Cacique sector of the National District on January 19, the Public Ministry reported this Thursday.

Specifically, according to the investigation, the aggression occurred when the victim and the accused were arriving at the parking lot of their residence with their three children. At that moment, following a discussion, Vargas Peña took out the firearm and fired a shot into the air. One of the sons intervened to prevent Vargas Peña from attacking his mother, while another ran to seek help in a nearby grocery store. The defendant repeatedly pushed the child who was trying to protect his mother, while hurling insults at him. Although the victim tried to flee with her children, she was cornered by the aggressor, preventing her from escaping, facts that were captured by security cameras installed in the surrounding area. According to the Public Ministry, Vargas Peña violently pushed the victim and the child, causing her to fall to the ground, where she was physically assaulted, while the accused fired four shots into the air. Local residents verbally intervened, asking the aggressor to stop, while the situation was witnessed by a witness who alerted the National Emergency and Security Attention System 9-1-1. Afterwards, the accused forced the victim and two of the children to enter the house and boarded his vehicle with the intention of leaving the place. At that moment, a police patrol, commanded by a first lieutenant, arrived after receiving the alert for gunfire. Vargas Peña left the weapon inside the vehicle, identified himself as a retired captain of the National Police and denied having fired shots. The National Police searched the vehicle and seized a Glock pistol, model 19, with its magazine and nine cartridges in the driver’s seat. After reading his fundamental rights, the accused was arrested in the act of a crime. The court ordered that the defendant, in his capacity as a retired captain of the National Police, serve preventive detention in the prison of the Special Operations Center of Manoguayabo, in Santo Domingo Oeste.
