Public Ministry appeals coercion measures against Espaillat brothers for Jet Set Club collapse

Santo Domingo.– The Public Ministry filed an appeal against the coercive measures imposed on the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, accused of involuntary manslaughter and involuntary assault and battery, following the tragic collapse of the roof at the Jet Set nightclub that occurred on April 8th. The tragedy, which left a balance of 236 people dead and more than 180 injured, generated national shock and strong public pressure for criminal responsibilities to be established. Preliminary investigations point to possible negligence in the maintenance of the establishment’s structure, owned by the accused.

Currently, the Espaillat brothers are under coercive measures consisting of a travel ban, periodic reporting to the authorities, and the payment of an economic guarantee of 50 million pesos. However, the prosecuting body considers these sanctions insufficient, given the level of seriousness of the case. The appeal seeks for a higher court to revoke the previous decision and impose more severe measures, such as pre-trial detention, arguing the risk of flight and the magnitude of the alleged facts. The Public Prosecutor’s Office maintains that there is sufficient evidence to justify a review of the defendants’ release conditions. It is expected that the Court of Appeals will hear the appeal in the coming days.
