Prosecutor orders investigation into the death of five men in a confrontation with the Police in Santiago

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, instructed the head of the General Directorate of Prosecution of the Public Ministry, Wilson Camacho, and the interim prosecutor of Santiago, Quirsa Abreu, to lead the investigations into the death of five men during an incident with National Police agents in the La Barranquita sector, Santiago. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in a shopping plaza on Olympic Avenue, where, according to the police version, an exchange of gunfire occurred between civilians and members of the law enforcement institution. In the shooting, Corporal Yohandy Encarnación was injured, who remains admitted to a health center in that province. The uniformed officer added that a sixth man managed to escape from the scene.

The deceased were identified as Edward Bernardo Peña Rodríguez, Carlos Enrique Guzmán Navarro (alias Charly or Charli Chasc), José Vladimir Valerio Estévez, Elvis Antonio Martínez Rodríguez, and Julio Alberto Gómez. All died while receiving medical attention at the Doctor Cabral y Báez Hospital. In the communication sent to the representatives of the Public Ministry, Reynoso instructed to determine “the objective circumstances in which the event occurred” and act according to the results of the investigation.
