Santo Domingo,.- The training ship of the Spanish Navy ‘Juan Sebastián de Elcano’ arrived this Tuesday in Santo Domingo as part of a trip around the world to contribute to the diplomatic action of the European country and to the preparation and training of future officers of the Spanish Navy.

The Juan Sebastián de Elcano began its 98th Training Cruise on January 10th, departing from the port of Cádiz, its base, with 73 midshipmen from the 428th General Corps and 158th Marine Corps promotions on board, according to a statement from the Spanish embassy in Santo Domingo. After crossing the Atlantic by sail and calling at Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) and San Juan (Puerto Rico), the ship will continue through Veracruz (Mexico), Puerto Limón (Costa Rica) and Curaçao. Subsequently, they will march towards four ports in the United States, including July 4th in New York, where they will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the USA. The ship carries out two main missions during the voyage: The comprehensive training of midshipmen (seamanship, military, social and human) as part of the third year of their five-year instruction at the Naval Military School, and to support the State’s foreign action in those ports it visits. Considered one of the most emblematic training ships in the world, the sailboat represents a formative tradition that combines naval discipline, diplomacy, and cultural projection in each of its ports of call.
