Young Lisbeth Suriel, 24 years old, completely denied the version offered by the Doctor Vinicio Calventi Hospital, in Los Alcarrizos, and assured that she had been a victim of medical negligence during her cesarean section and in the subsequent recovery process, which she described as “a hell.” According to her testimony, she was discharged directly from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to her home, despite being in critical condition. She reported that she did not receive adequate treatment and that, even, she had to clean her wounds with dirty sheets while they were draining fluid. “They say everything went according to protocol, but that’s not true. I left the hospital with an infection and a white blood cell count of 23,000. That almost cost me my life,” declared Lisbeth, visibly affected. Thanks to the intervention of the Ombudsman, she was transferred to the Dr. Reynaldo Almánzar Maternity Hospital, where she finally received the medical attention and humane treatment she needed. Since then, she has shown a remarkable improvement.

Lisbeth also denied the statements of Dr. Alfaro, director of the Calventi Hospital, who had assured that her baby was born with complications. “My son was born in perfect condition and was discharged immediately. He had no problem. The only risk was the one they caused me,” she affirmed firmly. The case has generated great public outrage, revealing serious failures in medical protocols and a worrying lack of institutional responsibility on the part of the Vinicio Calventi Hospital, a center that has been at the center of multiple complaints of alleged negligence. Lisbeth survives today to tell her story and demands justice, with the hope that no other woman has to go through the same suffering.
