The popular children’s series Peppa Pig adds a new narrative thread in favor of the representation of people with disabilities. This week, the production of the animated show confirmed that George, the younger brother of the protagonist pig, has moderate deafness. The condition will be explored in the next episodes to offer its children’s audience a respectful and educational view on life with hearing loss. The topic will first be addressed in the February 6th episode of Peppa Pig Tales on YouTube, with a story told from George’s auditory perspective. There it will be represented how a character with moderate hearing loss perceives the world and how a daily routine can be more challenging for him. Starting March 23rd, these events will expand to the linear programming with the episode titled “Hearing Loss” which will be broadcast on Nickelodeon in the United States, and which will also be part of the premiere schedule in Latin America via Discovery Kids.

In this key chapter, the Pig family discovers in a routine medical check-up that George has moderate hearing loss. After the diagnosis, he is fitted with a hearing aid, an element that will be key to showing how the little one begins to experience the world of sounds in a different and exciting way. To ensure that the representation of deafness is accurate, respectful, and educational, the creators worked hand in hand with specialized organizations.

Hasbro, owner of the brand, collaborated closely with the National Deaf Children’s Society of the United Kingdom and with Camilla Arnold, a producer with deafness who acted as a script consultant to ensure that the narrative and visual approach reflects real experiences.

The incorporation of the expert and the association with these organizations also transcends the screen: Hasbro has established a broader partnership with the National Deaf Children’s Society to support the organization’s work through fundraising initiatives and awareness campaigns. In addition, in the United States, the company partnered with the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) to promote hearing health and inclusion. This collaboration includes participation in events such as the Walk4Hearing and the creation of a co-branded online educational kit for children and parents available at HearingLoss.org, with resources that facilitate learning about deafness and hearing technology. The initiative also extends to digital content: to make the episodes more accessible to audiences with hearing difficulties, Hasbro has boosted the channel Peppa Pig Sign Language for Kids on YouTube, which features episodes interpreted in both British Sign Language (BSL) and American Sign Language (ASL). As part of the narrative and associated merchandise, the first George toy with his hearing aid has also been released on the market. George Pig’s case is more common than one might think and very relevant because it highlights a reality for many families, emphasized María Carmen Sacacia, president of the Spanish Confederation of Families of Deaf People. “The data shows that 95% of children with deafness are born into hearing families and that not all cases of deafness are detected at birth. We believe it is very appropriate that such an iconic series, followed by millions of children around the world, highlights the role of the family from the first moment of diagnosis. Families are not mere recipients of services: they are active protagonists throughout the process. This family empowerment is, ultimately, one of the factors that most contributes to the development, well-being, and real inclusion of children with deafness, as we will be able to see with George and the Pig family,” emphasized the institution’s spokesperson. The revelation about George adds to other representation stories that Peppa Pig has developed over the years. The series, which remains one of the most popular among the preschool audience, has introduced characters and plots that reflect different family and development realities. For example, characters like Mandy Mouse, a friend who uses a wheelchair, or Penny the polar bear, who has two moms.

On the other hand, the franchise also welcomed a new member of the Pig family in 2024. That year, the creators introduced Evie, Peppa and George’s younger sister, Mummy Pig’s third child. The arrival of a newborn served to continue exploring themes of family, adaptation, and coexistence in the series.

The new episodes of season 11 of Peppa Pig will be available in Latin America starting March 2nd on Hbo Max and Discovery Kids, with a new episode per day. In Spain, the premiere is scheduled for March 1st via Clan TV.
