Bolsonaro suffers vomiting and hiccups again in prison, according to his lawyers
São Paulo. – Lawyers for Jair Bolsonaro, in prison for plotting a coup, warned the Brazilian Supreme Court this Wednesday that the former president’s health condition “has worsened in recent days”, with new episodes of vomiting and hiccups “accentuated”.
The far-right leader’s defense described his health as “fragile” and, in this regard, requested the high court to notify the Federal Police to present with “utmost urgency” the medical report carried out on January 20th.
The former ruler’s (2019-2022) legal representatives believe that this report is essential to justify the request for house arrest for “humanitarian” reasons.
Bolsonaro was sentenced on September 11th to 27 years in prison for “leading” a coup plot made up of military personnel and former ministers, after losing the 2022 elections to the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The retired Army captain began serving the sentence at the end of November, first in a special room of the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasilia and, later, in a prison complex in the Brazilian capital.
Since then, his lawyers have unsuccessfully requested Judge Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case in the Supreme Court, to grant him house arrest.
In this context, they insisted on “the weakened state of health” of the leader of the Liberal Party (PL), who, “even, presented a worsening in recent days, with the appearance of episodes of vomiting and accentuated hiccups”.
Bolsonaro, who has been serving a sentence since November, was admitted to a hospital in Brasilia in the last week of 2025 to undergo four surgical interventions.
The first was to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia, and the other three were intended to partially block the diaphragm nerves in order to alleviate those recurrent hiccups.
Bolsonaro, 70 years old, has been suffering for months from episodes of dizziness, hiccups and vomiting, disorders that he and his entourage attribute to the stabbing he suffered during an act of the 2018 election campaign.
