A woman from Caucasia, Antioquia, Colombia, has reached 30 weeks of pregnancy with four identical quadruplets, a rare pregnancy that is being closely monitored by doctors due to its high-risk nature.
María Tapia will be transferred to Medellín for specialized medical care. Her family hopes the pregnancy can continue for as long as specialists consider safe to give the four babies more time to develop before birth.
Doctors will also determine how the delivery will be carried out, with the health of Tapia and her four babies as the priority.
The babies’ father, Jonatan Zapa, said the family has not found a record of another identical case in Colombia. According to him, ultrasounds performed during the pregnancy have indicated that the four babies are monozygotic, meaning they originated from the same fertilized egg and share the same genetic material.
Zapa said the possibility that the four babies share the same DNA could make the case significant for Colombian medicine, although the condition still requires medical confirmation and continued monitoring as the pregnancy progresses.
